Service to community and being a good citizen both changed from what it was in the past. Previously, people were not worried about global warming or the environment. As years pass, we are becoming more aware that are actions are truly affecting the environment and people as well. Research has shown that global warming is indeed a true theory. With this said, people are becoming more cognizant of the importance of community service. The reiterations of being good neighbors, helping the poor, respecting others, and abiding by the rules are all encompassed in being a good citizen. We use to say that we inherited the earth from our ancestors, but those days are long and gone. For more than 100 years now, in the words of the great leader of the Native American Suquamish Tribe, Chief Seattle (after whom the city is named), people have been proclaiming that we borrow the earth from our children. Protection of the biosphere and biodiversity is a relevant topic to everybody in the world. It is every human’s responsibility to accept that the earth does not belong to man, instead man belongs to earth. Having said so, I believe that the conservation of natural resources by every person would truly be a great service to the community.
Some of the atrocities that man has committed against mother earth include mining for oil in Alaska, while at the same time remaining oblivious to global warming. Another atrocity is countries like Japan, Russia and some Scandinavian countries want to uplift the ban on whale hunting. The Amazon rain forest is becoming depleted on a daily basis for the want of timber for industrial products. The Ganges River is being polluted everyday by industrial and domestics wastes. All of these things show our negligence towards mother Earth and our future generations. However, there is still some hope left for humanity. Everyone needs to do their part in maintaining a green and environment-friendly atmosphere. I have been working on recycling all the kitchen and garden waste by making compost at home; I also have been using recycled water for plants. I do not spit or litter on roads or anywhere else. I avoid the use of deadly plastics, which can seriously affect the environment.
In conclusion, now is the time that we should spread education, information, and awareness of how to create a better environment. This will allow people to come together for a greater cause than their selves. They will be able to bond with each other no matter what their race or sex is. This can, in turn, decrease violence, prejudice, and any other discrimination between people of the world because we are coming together as one to create a healthier planet. To do this, I have been working on “Share Your Book” organization of my own. It aims to enhance the reader of all ages around the world. The purpose of this organization is to reach out to people who are not as fortunate as most and educate them on the importance of community service. The organization is run by donations that anyone wants to provide in order to better educate the masses.
Last but not the least, I volunteer at Cancer Center and Jimmy Hale Mission where I provide meals, organize chess games, and spend time with the patients there. This kind of community service, I understand, helps share compassion and hope to anyone who is having a hard time in life.
